Andrea's change purse contained 8 quarters, 9 dimes, and 8 nickels. If andrea chose 2 coins randomly without replacing them in her purse, what is the probability that she chose 2 dimes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

flutter you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

uhm, excuse me. but can i get an explanation on this problem, please really stuck on this.

OpenStudy (swissgirl):

ok so we have 25 coins altogether

OpenStudy (swissgirl):

and we have 9 dimes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay im following

OpenStudy (swissgirl):

So the first time we choose a coin the probability that it will be a dime is 9/25 correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah?

OpenStudy (swissgirl):

ya there are 25 coins altogether and 9 dimes so the probability that it will be a dime is dimes/total amt of coins = 9/25

OpenStudy (swissgirl):

The second time we choose a coin

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i get you

OpenStudy (swissgirl):

there are only 24 coins left cuz we picked a dime

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (swissgirl):

so there are 24 coins and 8 dimes so the probabiity we will choose a dime is 8/24

OpenStudy (swissgirl):

So altogether the probability that we will choose 2 dimes is 9/25*8/24

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer would be 3/25, right?

OpenStudy (swissgirl):

yup :)

Omg! Thank You So Much!(:
