Why might the French have identified with Napoleon more than their previous kings? Success on the battlefield made Napoleon an admirable leader, unlike the previous rulers. Napoleon's rise from soldier to emperor meant it was possible for anyone to be a leader. The French felt attacked by the surrounding countries, so they rallied behind Napoleon. Previous rulers were unsuccessful in their attempts to introduce new political reforms.
