I plug my USB into my computer and laptop and the light goes on for a while but then turns off and the computer does not detect it what so ever. I have a lot of school and important things including family picture im not sure if its because something needs to be replaced or its dead but if i was dead would the light turn on? please help me

Make sure your using a USB port that is directly connected (so don't connect it through a keyboard, etc.) Some flash drives require more power then others. (That is why.)
Also try the flash drive on another computer who knows, maybe your flash drive corrupted or your port is broken.

@AnaheimNena714 While you have the flash drive plugged onto the computer, try moving the flash drive a bit up and down. If your computer shows any activity, then we'd know that the flash drive is ok, it's only a case of loose contacts.

oh, flash drives have a limited life. I think it's gone bad but you should also check on any computer which is having a different OS than windows 8. Windows 8 can create issues with devices.

Anyways I think the drive just got damaged, because everything else is ruled out, if the things inside are very important you could pay for a data recovery service but it is pretty expensive.
