Solve -4(-2y + 3) = 20. -1 1 4 -4

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Do you remember how to do the distributive property?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not at all, and I look up a example on how, but it only confuses me more.

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Alright. I'll show you.

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

|dw:1373047738288:dw|

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

So what is -4 * -2y give you, and what does -4 *3 give you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-4 and -2y is 8 and the other is -12, yes?

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

So basically.. |dw:1373047733081:dw|

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

No!!! I don't like when people mest up my learning! T~T

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

teaching*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm still confused..

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Anyway, -4 * -2 does equal to 8. But It's -4 * -2y. What happened to the y? What can we times y to? Well, you can't times y to nothing, so you leave y. So you leave it as -8y. Do you understand it?

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

-4 * 3 does equal to -12. That's correct! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

distribute nothing 1) divide both sides by \(-4\) 2) subtract \(3\) from both sides 3) divide both sides by \(-2\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes.

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Anyway, after doing the distributive property, your equation should look like: |dw:1373048018002:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the answer is -1?

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Nope. What is 20 divided by - 12?

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

Okay how about this. Give a random example of distributive property. |dw:1373048018503:dw|
