My mind goes blank at word problems: Mark and Nancy are making punch for a party and are using two types of juice: pineapple and papaya. The total number of quarts must be more than 9 but less than 15. They should use at least 4 quarts of each type. We want to find out how many quarts of each juice they should buy. Pick one of the ordered pair solution from your answer in #2 and explain what each number represents
we know that, whatever amount your pour of one, the other will have to be at least 4 quarts we also know that the amount of both, have to be more than 9 quarts so, if we pour 5 of papaya, the amount of pineapple will be (10-papaya) + 4 or (10 -5 ) +4 5+4 = 9 quarts of pineapple why +4? because each quantity should be at least 4 quarts so pineapple = a papaya = (10-a+4) 9 < a + (10-a+4) < 15
that should cover it, I'd think, since "a" cannot be 11, because 11 + 4 will make it 15 and it has to be < 15
thank you, you get the medal!
