how do I solve this. Im having a brain cramp. The Square roots are messing with me. (2x+20)(2x+40)=700^2 Thanks

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

You're trying to solve for x correct?

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

Well first off, you want to FOIL your 2 binomials. Do you know how to FOIL?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

ohh no, is the cat lover!

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

....

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

lame humor I gather heheh

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

if you expand this -> (2x+20)(2x+40) <-- it'll just give you a constant value which in the equation should EQUATE the other side

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

But it doesn't because when you foil that, you get an x^2 and an x. But I'm wondering... If you have to deal with square roots or if you can just divide by x and the rule is supposed to be that if there is a division bar it acts as subtraction for powers and make is just x.. But I'm not sure if you can apply that rule here.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I may have set up the equation wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It a word problem

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

That makes WAY more sense.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I could type it out?

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

Because unless I can do the rule im thinking of... Your answer is a really weird fraction.

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

Sure, type away I'll see if I can't help.
