A plant is placed in the dark for several hours then returned to the light. Some leaves on the plant were covered by foil patches, what does that indicate. A plant kept in the dark indicates that it had stored many starches.

The foil patches are used to block light from reaching the leaves. With no light, there is no photosynthesis, and with no photosynthesis no starch is formed. You can test for the presence of starch with an iodine solution after decolorizing the leaves with alcohol.
