Would you use substitution or elimination to solve each of the following systems? a. {y=2x+1 {y=3x-2 b. {x=3y-1 {3x+5y=4 c. {4x-3y=4 {3x+5y=16 Thanks! : )

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Id use a calculator

hartnn (hartnn):

we use substitution method, when any one of the variable is already isolate, like in the form y=.... or x=...

hartnn (hartnn):

so, for 1st one, would you use substitution ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, for the first one you would use the substitution method =)

hartnn (hartnn):

correct! :) what about 2nd ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yay! Second one, elimination? Because of the second part of the system not having an isolated variable, correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if the variables $x$ and $y$ aern't isolated I would be inclined to use gaussian elimination

hartnn (hartnn):

any one of the variable is isolated, then you can use substitution 'x' there is isolated, so you would use substitution for 2nd :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Woops! Okie dokie. Now I know : )

hartnn (hartnn):

and what about the 3rd ? now its easy, once you understood :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That would for sure be elimination! None that have an isolated variable. Wow! Thanks! It's definitely easy once you understand!

hartnn (hartnn):

correct! good :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks sooo much again! =)

hartnn (hartnn):

welcome ^_^
