suppose that during a test drive of 2 cars, one travels 288 miles in the same time that the second car travels 255 miles. if the speed of one car is 14 mph faster than the speed of the second car, find the speed of both cars???
You can set up the following. Let "x" equal the speed of the slower car. Let "x + 14" equal the speed of the faster car. Let "y" be the time (same time) that each takes, one to go 255 miles and the other to go 288 miles: y(x + 14) = 288 and yx = 255 You now have 2 equations in 2 variables which you can solve. Take the second equation, solve for "y", and take the resulting expression and substitute it into the first equation.
All good now, @lashell123 ?
