what does 24/8 = 3 is the scale factor ratio of area is the square of the scale factor. does that mean the ratio or 24/8 is 3:1?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The scale factor of two similar figures is how many times one figure is larger or smaller than the other. For example, if you start with a rectangle that measures 5 cm by 2 cm, applying a scale factor of two would give you a new rectangle that is 2 times longer and 2 times wider. You'd end up with a new rectangle that is 10 cm by 4 cm. You follow so far?

yes

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Now let's look at the areas. The area of a rectangle is A = length x width. Let's calculate the area of the original rectangle and the area of the new rectangle and compare them. For the original rectangle: A = LW = 5 cm x 2 cm = 10 cm^2 For the new rectangle: A = LW = 10 cm x 4 cm = 40 cm^2 Now notice. With the scale factor of 2, the length and width of the new rectangle are twice the size, but what happeneed to the areas? The new area of 40 cm^2 is how many times larger than the original area of 10 cm^2?
