What is the measure of XY shown in the diagram below? MY WORK, AND THE PICTURE INCLUDED IN THE NEXT POST.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

110 - 39 = 72 72/2 = 35.5 Every time I input this answer it comes out as 32. And I'd like to know why.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

its just an average ... except thing of that inside arc as a negative

OpenStudy (amistre64):

(110 - B)/2 = 39

OpenStudy (amistre64):

110 - B = 78 32 - B = 0 is correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, the answer that APEX gives me is 32. And I've worked it out backwards and forwards for myself 7 times, and I keep getting 35.5.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

even if you add instead of subtract the arcs ... you get the same value, just negated

OpenStudy (amistre64):

(100+B)/2 = 39 B =-32 , just drop the sign

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i see that you are putting the angle in for an arc ....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well.. yeah.. that is what they're asking for I suppose.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

just remember to average the arcs to get the angle ... you have 1 arc and an angle soo (110+B)/2 = 39 NOT (110+39)/2 = B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(114 + B)/2 = 36 I would use for this problem? V

OpenStudy (amistre64):

no, you are given 2 arc lengths ...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So subtract? >.<

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yes, (outer - inner)/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

39 degrees, right?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

correct
