OpenStudy (angelab97):

Given three segments of length x, 11-x, and x-4, respectively. Which of the following indicates the set of all numbers x such that the 3 segments could be the lengths of the sides of a triangle

OpenStudy (angelab97):

I know the answer E but why can't it be D?

OpenStudy (angelab97):

A. X>4 B. X<11 C. 0<X<7 D. 5<X<15 E. 5<X<7

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well, if we let 5< x < 15 so that means x = 14 is ok and our side of 11-x will give 11-14, which won't give us a valid value for the context

OpenStudy (angelab97):

when i did x+11-x> x-4 it equaled 15>x then x+x-4>11-x equaled x>5 x-4=11-x>x equaled 7>x How did all of that turn out to be 5<X<7?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well, I dunno what "x" is, so not sure if I'd say that x+x-4>11-x

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

I know that 11-14 won't work for the 2nd segment
