According to the internet, the equal sign was invented in 1557 by Robert Recorde.

Robert Recorde in 16th century , born in Tenby. He was a mathematicion and physician to King Edward 4th of England

I heard somewhere the equals sign was quite long, just to show two bars of 'equal' length if I recall correctly.
