square root x+7-x=1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what exactly is inside the square root?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1373395060578:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are we solving for x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just square everything to get rid of the square root, making it: isolate the sqrt sqrt(x + 7) = x +1 get rid of the sqrt by squaring evertying x+7 = (x+1)^2 expand x+7 = x^2 + 2x +1 move it all to one side 0 = x^2 +x - 6 factor the left hand side 0 = (x-2)(x+3) so x = 2 and -3 now test your values for x if you plug -3 into sqrt(x + 7) -x = 1 you get sqrt(4) + 3 = 1 5 =! 1 (5 does not equal 1) so x does not actually = -3 x only = 2 x=2

thank you
