During an election campaign, a candidate gave away 5000 little advertisements. The pens he gave away cost $0.23 each and the bumper stickers cost $0.14 each. He spent a total of $970.00 for the pens and bumper stickers. How many pens did he give away? @swissgirl

OpenStudy (swissgirl):

Okkkk so in total he gave away 5000 advertisements So let x represent the pens Pens: x bumper stickers: 5000- Pens = 5000-x Do you follow?

OpenStudy (swissgirl):

He gave away in total 5000 pieces some of which were pens and other which were bumper stickers. So there are x pens and 5000-x bumper stickers

but what is the answer

OpenStudy (swissgirl):

lol cheater :P Ok I am getting to it

k

OpenStudy (swissgirl):

So the bumper stickers $0.14 and the pens cost $0.23 Now in total we spend $970 Total cost of pens: .23*x Total cost of bumper stickers: .14*(5000-x) Total cost= Total cost of pens+ Total cost of bumper stickers 970= .23x+.14(5000-x) Now solve for x
