Scott has $500 in the bank. He withdraws the same amount of money each week for 12 weeks, at which point he has $20 left in the bank. How much money did he withdraw each week?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Well...if he starts with 500...and takes away 'x' amount every week for 12 weeks....and has 20 left after that...we have 500 - 12x = 20 Now subtract 500 from both sides -12x = -480 Divide both sides by -12 x = 40 So this means he withdrew $40 each week for 12 weeks Lets check....40 dollars times 12 weeks = 480 Is that 20 less than 500? Yes...so 40 is the correct answer
