Gwen has 3 red erasers, 4 green erasers, 2 black erasers, 5 purple erasers, and 6 yellow erasers in her book bag. What is the probability Gwen will reach in her book bag and select a purple eraser? A. 6 14 B. 1 4 C. 5 19 D. 3 20

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

What is the total number of erasers? What is the number of purple erasers?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Probability = # of events you want to happen ---------------------------- # of total events possible so how many erasers in all are there? and how many do you want?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

P(purple eraser) = (number of purple erasers)/(total number of erasers)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i want 5 and the possiblity is 14

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

"Gwen has 3 red erasers, 4 green erasers, 2 black erasers, 5 purple erasers, and 6 yellow erasers in her book bag." I see 3 + 4 + 2 + 5 + 6...which = ...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

20 ughh u can tell im tired :)

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

lol...okay so total # of erasers = 20...and you want 5...so P(purple) = 5 --- 20 Simplify that down a bit to get...?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Great P(purple eraser) = 5/20, which can be reduced

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1/4

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Perfect :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks ik i am :)

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

haha conceited! :P great job :)
