An ant looks up to the top of a tree with an angle of elevation of . If the ant is 43 feet from the base of the tree, what is the height of the tree, to the nearest tenth?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

We need that angle of elevation first

OpenStudy (anonymous):

38 degrees

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

|dw:1373465085738:dw| You would use the tangent function to solve this...because you have the side opposite the angle that you want...and the side adjacent to the angle that you have

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

|dw:1373465170963:dw|

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

So you would do \[\tan 38 = \frac{ x }{ 43 }\] and solve for 'x'

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I solved for 'x' (or tried) and I got 55.03 which is not one of the answers

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

What did you do to solve for 'x'? what you should have as an equation is \[\tan (38) \times 43 = x\] so put your calculator in "degree" mode...and do that calculation

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

for tan38 you should be getting 0.7812856265

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My calculator wasnt in degree mode. I got it

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Ahh ...alright good work!
