please help, i dont know how to do ratios...or proportions

the first questions is asking you to simplify the ratios (fractions)

you can do that by dividing the top and the bottom by the same number.

so the trick is to find the biggest number that goes into both the top and the bottom

or you can simplify in steps

if you had

8/16 you could divide top by 8 and bottom by 8 to get 1/2
but if you did not notice 8 works, you could divide both by 2 (both numbers are even, so you know 2 works)
you would get 4/8
then notice 2 works for this , so divide top and bottom by 2 to get 2/4
and then again to get 1/2
and you are done.

that will work. each time you "simplify" you get a new fraction (or ratio) that equals the one you started with. the only difference is the last one is in simplest form.

so 4/8 = 2/4 = 1/2
but 1/2 can not be simplified any more because there is no number that goes evenly into both 1 and 2. so 1/2 is simplest form.

I think they want you to write your ratios in simplest form

to do these problems it is helpful to know division very well.

if you don't know if 7 goes into 24 evenly you have to try it and see.

but 3*7= 21 (too small) and 4*7= 28 (too big)
in other words 24/7 = 3 with a remainder of 3
