In 1520, the Spaniard Hernan Cortes wrote, “I had [the Aztec] idols...thrown down the steps...[I had images of Our Lady and of other saints put there, which caused [their leader] and the other natives some sorrow...” Which answer best describes why the Native Americans felt such sorrow? They used their idols as a form of currency. They were afraid of the Spaniards and their beliefs. They believed in the power of the idols. They did not like the new paintings and statues as much.
