PLEASE HELP, CANT GET ANYONE TO HELP ME AROUND HERE. the sum of -51+(-37 1/12) is equal to what? a)14 3/4 b)-14 3/4 c)88 3/4 d)88 11/12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-51 + - 37 1/12 do you know how to turn a mixed number to an improper fraction ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No,sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

your mixed number, -37 1/12 needs to be turned into an improper fraction. Don't worry about the negative sign right now. Anyways, take the whole number and multiply it by the denominator , then add that to the numerator, and put that over the original denominator. Thats confusing, let me show you... (37 x 12 + 1)/12 = 445/12 do you understand how I did that ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh......and put back the negative sign....so it is - 445/12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now we have -51/1 + (-445/12) are you with me so far ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to add/subtract fractions, they have to have the same denominator, if they don't, you have to make them have the same denominator. Do you know about common denominators and how to find them ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think i get it now, thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you do it from here ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

any problems and you can tag me....I will help

OpenStudy (anonymous):
