Now say I own a steel mill around this time, and the colony America has just set up has an abundance of iron and copper (I think those are the two metals used in steel), but no way to turn it into steel, plus they desperately need steel to keep themselves alive. Yep, you got it! The business owners at the time wanted to drive down costs to their businesses by buying cheap raw materials overseas; then they would bring them back here, turn them into finished goods, and sell them in other colonies that needed it and were willing to pay a premium for the finished goods!
