This is probably easy, but I am confused....help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

as a math kid i shall try to help LOL

OpenStudy (anonymous):

At the nuthouse, a pound of peanuts cost $3 per lb and cashews cost $6 per lb. If you want a mixture pf peanuts and cashews that weighs 3 lbs and costs $5.25, how many cashews would you need to purchase ? I set it up like this... p + c = 3 3p + 6c = 5.25 I am getting 4.25 = c and that can't be right....unless it is ounces. Am I doing something wrong ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

aghh let me get pen and paper

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol....ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is the 4.25 in ounces or did I set it up wrong ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh jeez..we need help here. @GoldPhenoix @terenzreignz

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry im actually just the history kid xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol..I understand....I like History also

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

hmm...lol argh I need a paper and pen also lol...in my head is NOT working...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mine is not either...as you can see

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh wait....I see a mistake in my work.....in my work I put 3c + 6p = 5.25 and it should be 3p + 6c......let me do it again....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

p + c = 3 -->p = 3 - c 3p + 6c = 5.25 3(3 - c) + c = 5.25 9 - 3c + c = 5.25 -2c = 5.25 - 9 -2c = -3.75 c = 1.87 rounds to 1.9 I think I got it now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I feel stupid

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Not quite...you forgot the "6c" in the first part of your solving...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I really feel stupid now....I can do it now.....thanks for looking at this

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

p + c = 3 -> p = -c + 3 3p + 6c = 5.25 3(-c + 3) + 6c = 5.25 -3c + 9 + 6c = 5.25 3c + 9 = 5.25 3c = -3.75 c = a negative number? Lol I'm so confused...but good luck!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is negative.....is it set up wrong ?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

It looks set up right to me! lol @jim_thompson5910 mind easing our minds on this? lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes...he's a good one to call

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

I bet we're making the silliest of a mistake too!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know....this should be an easy problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jim_thompson5910 ....math wiz needed

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know who else to call....everybody in their right mind is probably sleeping

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

@FutureMathProfessor How about you? Mind helping us with this one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Callisto ....mind looking at this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3 pounds of the lowest price one would be $9, so it's not possible.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is not possible ?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Yeah no it's not looking like it's possible

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmmm....I guess I will just put that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Your solution must be between your minimum and maximum. In this case, it's not.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Was this a problem in a textbook or just a random problem your teacher made up?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok....thanks for the help everyone.....what a weird question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

random problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol..............does that mean I get a medal? :D

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Yeah 2 of em haha thanks for easing our minds lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I wish I could give more medals...I would give 1 to john weldon

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

ehh don't worry about it @kelliegirl33 no big deal :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I will give you a hug instead....HUG

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Haha that works! much better :P have a nice night kelliegirl :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):
