please help.. Look at the figure. if cotx=1/2, what is the value of y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A.3/2 B.3/4 C.1/4 D.9/4

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

couple of problems, the ratio doesn't match the image, and there is no y in the image.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there is actually

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in the opposite side

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its measure is 4y cm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is the pic they gave me...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think its D, when I plugged it in I got close to .5

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

ok... sorry so with x as the reference angle cot = adj/opp so cot(x) = 1/2 of cot(x) = 3/4y so equate the ratios 1/2 = 3/4y cross multiply and solve for y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cotx is adjacent over opposite so 3/4y = 1/2 so it's not supposed to be close to 0.5 or 1/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its 3/4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no. where did you get that idea? you're supposed to solve for y

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

what do you get when you cross multiply 1/2 = 3/4y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not write what you see is equated to 1/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im getting 0.6666666666666667

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

can you solve this |dw:1373575779350:dw|
