Well, after the Compromise of 1877 (the Republicans agreed to remove the 10 military districts in the South that made sure Freedmen were being treated fairly decently, in exchange for Rutherford B. Hayes to become president) Southern Democrats began to limit African Americans. Politically, it was nearly impossible for African Americans to vote. At the polls, racist literacy tests, poll taxes, and the grandfather clause made killed any hope of African Americans getting to vote. Socially, segregation impeded on all African Americans. From public schooling, to drinking fountains, blacks and whites were legally "separate but equal". Economically, African Americans could never afford to get a job better then share cropping, the South's replacement of slavery. Also, because of the sharecropping system, most African Americans kids had to work their plot of land to help their families, not allowing them to be educated, thus not allowing them to elevate themselves from the poverty they were in. That's a crap outline, but when you write your own essay, use some of these (and try do your own essay)" KKK Jim Crow Laws Plessy V. Ferguson sharecropping Compromise of 1877 Reconstruction Andrew Johnson Southern Democrats
