http://prntscr.com/1evuop What is a root in this Graph?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The root's are tricking me.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

A root of an equation is a point where the graph of the equation crossed the x-axis. There is a point that is just below the x-axis. What value of x is closest to that point?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

This has nothing to do with square root. Here "root" is being used simply as the meaning I wrote above.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok let me try to see if I know it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2.2? B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And -1?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Notice how many tick marks you have on the x-axis from 0 to 10. The tick marks can't be 1 unit each, or you'd have 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 10. How many units is each tick mark on the graph?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Right. Now try to see which tick mark is closest to where the graph crosses the x axis.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6 and -1

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

I only see 6. Where do you see -1? You are only looking for the x-value.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But there ins't a 6 in the Answer Choice's.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So 5.8?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Yes. That's the closet number to 6, so that's it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So just that?
