word problem help please? (anyone above geometry)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Coach Johnson is 10 years older than Tim. When Tim started football 3 years ago, Coach Johnson was twice his age. How old is Tim now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[J = T+10 \\ J-3 = 2(T-3) \Rightarrow J=2T-3\]So we have:\[ J=T+10 \\ J=2T-3\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i need to solve j =2t-3?

It's a system of equations. Do you know how to solve these? You can also read it as: "Johnson is 10 years older than Tim" and "Johnson is 3 less than twice Tim's age" If that isn't working for you, just set \(T+10=2T-3\) and solve for\(T\).
