The surface was very hot as the earth's crust was still in the solidification process.
Also there were a lot of vulcanoes which spewed poisonous gasses like ammonia and methane in the air. Water vapor collected in the atmosphere (to clouds) and boiling acid rain fell from the thunderstorms that lasted millions of years.

So it wasn't a good place at that time.
