would you do exponents first in -3 x (4^2-6) or subtract first and then do exponents?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Order of operations is best remembered by the acronym, GEMDAS. Grouping symbols, Exponentials, Multiply, Divide, Addition (left to right), Subtraction (left to right).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Exponents come before subtraction in the order of operations. So, to evaluate the inside of the parentheses you would evaluate 4^2 first, then subtract the 6.

That said, yes, exponentiation does come before subtraction in this order.
