You want to disable the automatic restart on system failure. This will let you see which stop error you are getting. This will be something like:
STOP Error 0x00000009: IRQL_NOT_GREATER_OR_EQUAL

Each stop error has a meaning and can help locate the problem.

There is one tricky bit... memory errors. Thanks to virtual memory, a memory error can also be a sign of a hard drive problem. Still, at least knowing the stop error gets you something to look for.

As for how to prevent the automatic reboot, it depends on which version of the OS you have.
