As a motorist approaches the turnpike, he travels at the rate of 20 miles per hr in street traffic. For the first mile on the turnpike, he travels at the rate of 30 miles per hr and then covers the next mile in one minute. What was his average rate for the first three miles of this trip? (A) 25mph (B) 30 mph (C) 33mph (D) 36 2/3 mph (E) 50 mph ~~ What third mile?!
Divide this question up to three parts. 1. His speed was 20mil/h 2. His speed was 30mil/h 3. He traveled 1mile in a min -> his speed would be 1mil/1min convert 1mil/1min into xmil/60min so basically multiply 60 on both sides which will become 60mil/60min=60mil/1h So the average would be 20+30+60/3=36 and 2/3mph
Oh...thanks. Sorry for causing you to think =p
The question threw me off for a moment because I didnt understand at first why it said 3miles... I didnt realize the 20mph part lol
