a car travels a distance of 70 miles in 2 and a half hours. how much faster on the average must it travel to make the trip in 3/4 hours less time? (m.p.h.)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what does "3/4 less time" mean? does it mean in three quarters of the time?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or maybe it means 3/4 of a hour less, so it would be one and three quarters hour

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea i think it means three quarters of the hour

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first find the original speed, which is 70 divided by 2.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i get 28 mph

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then find the speed if it takes one and three quarter hours, i.e. divide 70 by 1.75

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i get 40 mph finally find the difference

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 12
