yes the slash is a division sign.
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
correct, synthetic division wont work here, coz x^2+5 is not a linear
OpenStudy (anonymous):
here also synthetic division can be used
OpenStudy (anonymous):
?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
here the last two expression will be the remainder
first make x^2+5 x^2+0.x+ 5
and it is same as for the linear division say by x+a

not able to understand
OpenStudy (anonymous):
woud the correct answer be x+8+2x-2/x^2+5 ?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
here first 1 of coefficient of x^3 in x^3+8x^2-3x+16 will move down
then multiply 0 and -5 by 1 and the result should be written below 8 and -3 succesively
OpenStudy (anonymous):
again multiplying 0 and -5 by (0+8) and writing so succesively below -5 (previously obtained) and 16...
OpenStudy (anonymous):
thus the quoteint is x+8 and the remainder is -8x -24
