how do you find surface area of a cylinder

OpenStudy (kainui):

Try thinking of peeling off the surface of a cylinder. What does it look like? |dw:1373956154992:dw| Remember that when you put it all back together it all has to fit, so you'll see that the areas of those pieces share similar perimeters. If you know how to find the area of the pieces, you can find the area of the whole thing. =) I can help more if you try and it's not working.

OpenStudy (primeralph):

Depends on if the cylinder is open or closed.
