Place the prism so that the rectangular face is downwards. If you cut parallel to the top edge the cross-section is always a rectangle. if your cut makes an angle to the top edge and does not involve the ends of the prism, the resulting cross-section is a triangle. Both these will be true even if your cut is not vertically downwards. If the cut makes an angle to the top edge and goes through one or both ends of the prism, the result may be a triangle or a quadrilateral.
