How do you delete your account?

OpenStudy (ja1):

You see OS can never delete accounts, but it can most certainly IP Ban you if what you want is to never come back :)

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

idk its possible perhaps OS needs another update? idk

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

@ja1 is totally right.

OpenStudy (ja1):

I am? ^,^ yippie

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

OpenStudy is a lasting record. If they allow people to delete accounts, it is not longer a lasting record. Also, if you delete an account, then the medals you handed out could go by-by, causing issues for all the people that helped you. So there are at least two reasons why they intentionally chose to not let people delete accounts.

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

Yea @e.mccormick. Also I'm sure that deleting the posts and original questions would also be a horrible thing for the record, I mean imagine the damage it would do to the flow of the convo. The only way to have done it would be to KEEP the medals, and everything with it, and just replace the username with something like "[deleted]". Though the (super-funny) original developer of OpenStudy (one of them, he's @farmdawgnation ) had a much blunter reasoning. He mentioned the issues that you brought up (this was all in chat) but when @bahrom7893 but accross the idea that it could replace the username with a placeholder, he stated that actually the original reason for keeping the usernames was to inflate the user count. :P He also said it was possible, but it would require going deep inside the database to rename or change the user.

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

lul sort-of the same thing?

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

He mentioned that Twitter had done the same thing when it first started.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, they are using MongoDB as the back end, so there are no joins. Depending on the data structure, changing a user name could be a very large operation.

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

ya thats what he explained :P

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

They do use MongoDB? I know that it's rising in popularity, but I wasn't aware that OpenStudy actually uses it.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Yah, they may have the user name stored independently in every post.... at that point, you would need to search through every last post... hmmm... well, they seem to keep a record of things you post, so they would need to cycle through that and modify each document's content. Yes, it is their back end. Preetha confirmed that in the stuff that came out for the Hackathon.

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

What? I thought that the Hackathon never started?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

It never did, but she talked a little about the stuff that was used at OS in one of the posts.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@JA1 You can't say "impossibru" and then post the picture. It doesn't work that way.

OpenStudy (ja1):

*Checks post*...hmm... yupp seems to be working for me ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Smartass.

OpenStudy (ja1):

:)

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

:P so mean @MathSucks42 @JA1 is amazing gotta respect that man ^_~

OpenStudy (ja1):

D'aw thanks Jamie :) but I don't really care ^,^

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

haha kay but i thought the whole world (meaning everyone at OS) should respect their ambis. God lol :P who could be mean to you it shouldn't even be possible... -.-

OpenStudy (ja1):

Meh, I have had worse, we are typically a subject of mockery and meanness ^,^ it helps keep your patience in check.

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

haha i bet. Thanks for the tip, I will definitely keep that in mind if I ever become an ambi...I'm waiting for a response, it will probably come in about a bazillion weeks knowing the people here at OS lol

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

They are the greeters here.... why would we respect them? Ahem. =P

OpenStudy (ja1):

:P @e.mccormick now that's just plain... degrading...

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, half the ambi messages I see are basically, "Welcome to OS, now can I lead you to the right part because you just posted in the wrong one," or more polite words to that effect.

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

lol that seems pretty accurate @e.mccormick

OpenStudy (ja1):

Yes that's our main job, but the concept is to male OS a friendly place by helping everyone, being nice, encouraging users, etc...

OpenStudy (ja1):

LOL "male"

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

The other half is, "And stop cheating!" Now the third half....

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

lol the third half :P @JA1 what is it with you and males? >.<

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Yes, there is overlaps in the halfs... so some percentage of wecome messages are also stop cheating messages. The third half is tutoring things.

OpenStudy (ja1):

Oh stop being jelly @e.mccormick ;)

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

lol i don't @e.mccormick is jealous @JA1 ....lol :P perhaps it is the opposite... jk idk :/

OpenStudy (ja1):

I know he ain't jealous xD but meh, I'm proud to be an ambi no matter what, besides the title doesn't matter, everything I do now would do without the pretty little "A"

OpenStudy (ja1):

I*

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

i can totally agree with you on that one. Hold up, according to someone, something is quote "damn serious" so imma see wats up. catcha later dudes

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

See, three halfs!

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

Lemme just say right now that 3 hours ago some people were quite high.

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

lol i know you're not talking about me @dumbsearch2 lol :P

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

No, no. Just being silly! Silly is a natural thing. And I don't mean herbal!

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

<3 you guys :D

OpenStudy (ja1):

Dat comment @e.mccormick

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

lol u can say that again :P not herbal lol

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):
