My mom has an her iron at 18. What are the effects of this? How important is iron and how do I help her make it better?
Iron is pretty important, as it is crucial in oxygen transport for metabolism (cellular respiration). Here's a list from google of iron rich foods.: Red meat Egg yolks Dark, leafy greens (spinach, collards) Dried fruit (prunes, raisins) Iron-enriched cereals and grains (check the labels) Mollusks (oysters, clams, scallops) Turkey or chicken giblets Beans, lentils, chick peas and soybeans Liver Artichokes
Is it bad that is is so low?
Does your mom get tired a lot?
Yes, she is always tired.
i'm not sure how low that is, i'm not a medical professional. is she vegetarian?
Nope, she eats the stuff stated above also
if her iron intake is proper, then it might be due to proteins that manage the iron (ferritin). I'm unsure what you would. Did her doctor advise anything?
She is going to the doctor today, they are going to tell her the results of some test today.
Thats good. the doctor can probably help her more since he's trained. good luck to your mom!
its increased iron normal is 12-14 usually....maybe due to many diseases ....or polycythemia....maybe she has to get her underlying disorder causing her increased iron corrected as well as decrease her iron overload...maybe like blood letting.....also have to know if shes having any disorder of marrow or lung disorder causing decreased oxygenation of blood..... more tests maybe required?unless she is diagnosed promptly from her medical past by her doctor..... good luck and pray for the best
