What number would you add to the polynomial below to complete the square? x^2+17 I got a decimal.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got 8.5

OpenStudy (radar):

x^2 term already has a 1 so that is a good start. next take 1/2 of the coefficient of x which is missing, are you sure that it is just 17 or is it 17x ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's 17x Sorry for my spelling.

OpenStudy (radar):

O.K. then the coefficient of x is 17, take 1/2 of 17 or 17/2, Now square that and you will get 289/4 That is the value that would be added. That would give you x^2 +17x + 289/4 or (x+17/2)^2

OpenStudy (radar):

Good luck with these, I gotta run.

Ok,Bye :(
