You participate in things, work really hard, show your commitment to the code of honor, report any violations you see, and basically be a very active part of OS.  Don't try to moderate people you see doing violations, just report them and perhaps ask them if they read what the CoC says about what they are doing.  Then, you might get noticed enough for them to consider making you a Mod.  Preetha might even reply to an email of yours saying you sound like good moderator material... and it still may not happen.

Another thing to do is basically the above, and apply for the Ambassador program.  That could easily show your involvement more, and move you towards mod candidacy.
