What is the position of the earth in relation to the sun in the winter for the Northern Hemisphere?
Winter is colder than Summer because the angle of the earth toward the Sun. The Earth is actually closer to the Sun during the northern Hemisphere winter but the hemisphere is angled way and gets less direct light.

So during this part of the year in the picture, people in Australia are having summer while people in the USA are having winter. The Earth will stay at this slant as it goes around the earth and eventually it'll be having summer and winter reversed, like this: |dw:1374036123189:dw|
