2. The paragraph that begins “I passed the night wretchedly” provides clues to the characterization of Dr. Frankenstein. Reread this paragraph and describe Dr. Frankenstein's frame of mind. What is he feeling? Be sure to incorporate details from the paragraph in quotation marks to support your ideas. 3. Why is Dr. Frankenstein repelled by his creation? Part II- Comparing the Text to the Film Adaptations (20 Points): 4. Although there have been many film and television adaptations of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, most of them depart significantly from the novel. Write a paragraph to explain how you think the selection you read is different or similar to one or the film clips noted in this Discovery Ed video segment (opens in a new window) http://connect.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm?cdpartner=H12A-0531&cduser=4D6C-92C1&guidAssetId=36e2450a-54fc-418f-92d1-f1f34905f013 If you cannot get the video to load, just do a Google search of "Frankenstein video" and choose one to compare it to. Be sure to refer to specific examples (textual evidence) from both the text and the films. Part III- Focus on Elements of the Gothic in the Film Adaptations (20 points) 5. From one of the film adaptations, list what elements of the Gothic tradition you observe. Be certain to be as specific as possible.
A. The setting of the story is where and when the story takes place. " dreary night of November ". " One in the morning " . I am not sure if the raining has anything to do with the setting or not.
B. The atmosphere of the story is the tone/mood of the story. I am guessing at this....the atmosphere is dreary and a bit scary when it starts talking about the dull yellow eyes of the creature.
2. He seems a bit distressed at what he had done, yet he was accomplishing hid life-long dream. " He passed the night wretchedly " means he was distressed and sorrowful for what he had done.
3. He was propelled by the creature probably because of the looks of the creature. The dull yellow eyes, the yellow skin, his pearly white teeth, which in contrast made him look horrid.
4. One of the video clips portrays the movie like more of a comedy type then the actual scary, serious movie that it is supposed to be. They even made comic books of Frankenstein. I am not sure I can give specific textual examples.....I will try... One of the video clips I watched was the 1970's version by Mel Brooks. And lady friend/helper...I am not sure who she is, starts calling Frankenstein's name and she is saying it wrong and he corrects her....it is more comedic then serious. However, In the story, there doesn't seem to be much comedy. I don't know what else to write here....sorry
5. Gothic tradition : One element is the time period. The 1800's is part of the medieval period, which is when Gothic literature was popular. Also, the setting, the castle, which is typical for a Gothic story. The clothes worn were very dark and drab which is another Gothic feature. Nothing bright and colorful. Also, you might want to read this and jot down anything you might think would be of help. http://www.scepticthomas.com/gothic/gothic.htm I hope I was able to help....sorry it took so long.
