Since the cell is dividing, but each new cell will still need to have the full 46 chromosomes, the DNA has to first be copied. That happens during the _________________ of interphase. Then, during mitosis, each new nucleus will get a copy of all of the chromosomes so that they each have 46.

Interphase has three parts. The first part is called G1 or gap 1 during which the cell is growing and protein synthesis takes place . The second part is called the S phase and the DNA is copied in the cell. The final stage is called G2 or gap 2 when the cell divides into two new cells.
