I would surmise the carpetbaggers had their own interests at heart, rather than the African American legislators.  Afterall, they were opportunists for the most part.

Well as most groups do not remain cohesive, they now are splintered into different groups, some wanting to be separists, others wanting to integrate, others separate but equal and then there are the rap singers, and if you listen, they want something altogether different.
