@knowel Notice that AG = 2AD. Hence AD/AG = AD/2AD = 1/2. To make the right hand-side equation also be 1/2, we have to replace the question mark with a segment that that is half the length of BH. The only one is BE hence the ratio is written as AD/AG = BE/BH.
