if the base of a triangle is 10 and the height is 12 what is length of the other line hypotenuse line

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is your triangle a right triangle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

heres a picture of what I was given and the whole question was... TV = 20 and CU = 12. Find the length of UV. Show equations and all work that leads to your answer. I just guessed base was 10 and height was 12

Use Pythagoras's theorem from here: \[a ^{2}+b ^{2}=c ^{2}\] where TU is your hypotenuse

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that cant be right a2+b2=c2 would look like 10squared which is 100 and 12squared which is 144 it says add them together which is 59,536 theirs no way that's right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If we added 100 to 144, we'd get 244. So, \[c ^{2} = 244\] what is c?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry once you square that though you get 59,536

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ahhhhh I see what happened now. Easy fix we just need to square root the 244 not square it. So, what the square root of 244 \[\sqrt{244} = ?\]
