Please help me with this its one of my last questions!
Celina is buying fabric scraps to make koozies for her glasses. Each glass is cylindrical with a diameter of 4 inches and a height of 8 inches. The koozies will cover only the sides of the glasses. What is the amount of fabric she will use? What does this amount represent? Use three point one four for pi. Show your work.
The area you're looking for is the lateral area, which is a fancy way of saying the area of the rounded rectangle that forms the body of a cylinder. This is a rectangle, it's just curved, so the equation for its area is going to be equal to its height times its width. It's height is just the height of the cylinder, which is 8 inches in this case. The length of the rectangle is just the circumference of one of the circle ends, which is d*pi, in this case 4pi inches. So multiply these two together to get the area.
can you just give me the formula to find the lateral area of a cylinder?
Sure, it's: \[Lateral Area=(circumference)(height)=d \pi h=2 \pi r h\]
Thanks :D!
You're welcome, glad I could help
