can someone please explain the formula to me on how to multiply with significant numbers?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

when you multiply or divide, the number of significant figures in the result is the same as the smallest number of significant figures in any of the numbers used to produce the result. \[4*23.1 = 92.4 = 90\]because 4 only has 1 significant figure \[11*13.01 = 143.11 = 140\]because 11 has only 2 significant figures
