They are very sad. Hint: Use estar when it is a state of the subject, something that is not permanent . Use ser when it is a quality of the subject (and normally a quality is permanent). She is tired (is to be tired a quality or a specific state?) She is clever (is to be clever a quality or a specific state?). Ask the same question with "sad". Estar! Ser is to describe a permanent fact about someone. Like their nationality, height, skin color, etc. For example: "Nosotros somos chicas mexicanas." We are Mexican girls, a fact about ourselves that we can't change. Estar is used to describe temporary over ever-changing facts, such as emotions, health, and place. For example: "Ella esta en la tienda." She is in the store, but twenty minutes from now she will be home.
