I wouldn't choose B or D because the role of the woman during this time (I'm assuming we're talking about the 1600s. Religion played a very important role for those who traveled from England, but I believe at this time it was the Church of England to which they belonged; however, many of those who traveled to the "New World" to separate from the church. Religion played such an important role that they felt it was important to read the Bible, making literacy an important role. I think the best choice would be C.
