altitude = geometric mean of segments of hypotenuse
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
All the problems you've been dealing with are basically related to geometric mean only
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
you may do these using similar triangles approach as you've learned them in geometry already. but since all are geometric mean related, i would guess your teacher wants you do these using geometric mean thingy
OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):
so i am pretty much doing what i kinda did with the other ones

you wanto do these using similar triangles
or
you wanto do these using geometric mean ?
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
pick one
OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):
geometric mean
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
cool then its easy, you dont have to setup a proprtion
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
altitude = geometric mean of segments of hypotenuse

when we are done can we try doing it the other way
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
okay lets do both,
Lets first do geometric mean
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
altitude = x+5
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
segments of hypotenuse = x, 20
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
altitude = geometric mean of segments of hypotenuse
\(x+5 = \sqrt{x \times 20}\)

thats how we take geometric mean right ? (multiply both, take square root)
OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):
i think so
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
square both sides
solve x
OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):
ok ^^ wouldnt that cancel out sqrt
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
yes it wud
